Welcome to Danvers, Massachusetts.
Danvers is a town located in Essex County, Massachusetts. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 25,212. The present day town of Danvers was formerly named Salem Village, and is close to the city of Salem, Massachusetts.
The town of Danvers is in southern Essex County, one of the earliest settlements in the area. Colonists had moved into the area as early as 1630, when Salem began allocating land grants and a village was authorized in what is now modern Danvers as early as 1636. Governor John Endicott was one of the first settlers in the town and established Orchard Farm, a very large land holding for its day, with 300 to 400 acres. The town's location, proximity to Salem and easy access to roads north and south have transformed it from a small colonial farming community to a vigorous suburban municipality which is proud of its municipal services and school system.
Danvers is situated in the Greater Boston Area, which has excellent rail, air, and highway facilities. State Route 128 and Interstate Route 495 divide the region into inner and outer zones, which are connected by numerous "spokes" providing direct access to the airport, port, and intermodal facilities of Boston.
Danvers has a comprehensive recreation program for the families of Danvers. With approximately 7,000 family units and 3,800 children in our public and parochial schools, there is a commitment by the Town to provide meaningful recreation programs and facilities for citizens of all ages in the community. Each summer the Recreation Summer Program provides eight week playgrounds for children ages six through fourteen years of age. One week baseball, basketball and soccer clinics are available to children in June and July. Tennis and swimming instruction are provided to families. For over twenty five years Danvers has provided a program for families with children having special needs.
Danvers has a very active youth sports program with girls' and boys' leagues in softball, baseball, soccer, football and hockey. In addition, women and men participate in softball, basketball and volleyball leagues. Over two thousand children and six hundred adults enjoy participating in these leagues.
The Danvers Waterfront is alive with seasonal excitement! Nearly 1,100 boaters have claimed Danvers their homeport. Made up of four rivers; the Danvers River, the Waters River, the Crane River and the Porter River; Danvers provides boaters with a sheltered harbor with less than a 30 minute ride to the ocean.
Danvers is home to the (Danversport Yacht Club) and four private marinas (Bunky's Marina, Liberty Marina, Pope's Landing Marina and Riverview Marina). The Town of Danvers owns and operates the Crane River Marina located on McDewell Ave. which provides dockage for 58 vessels up to 25' in length.
